As I had written in December’s update, one of my goals this month was to: “Finish up the theme and get the site launched on January 18, 2019, the day Captain Cook became the first European to discover Hawaiʻi in 1778.”
Today a new site launches, but not the one I had planned for in that post. At least I got the date right. This theme isn’t the one I had been working on. It’s one I had been working on mostly as a personal reference site for our ʻohana. The theme will likely change in the coming months, but it works for now and gets me publishing.
From Development to Personal Blog
GeoffreyShilling.com used to have development-related content. The site is my personal blog. Why the change? Simple: life and priorities.
This is going to be a place for me to share my fitness journey, recipes (especially easy, healthy ones), fitness tips, and productivity tips I learn along the way.
I’m a runner and have been running off and on for several years. I always took winters off because I don’t like running in the cold and I like treadmills even less.
My motivation has always been to make sure I’m a parent that can keep up with my kids. My son is 11 and my daughter is five. I’d say I’m doing a pretty good job with that.
I also became a volunteer firefighter in March of 2016. That’s another reason it’s important for me to stay in shape. It can make a big difference in some situations.
Last summer I decided to push myself and step things up. I’ve never really been overweight or anything, but I wanted to get in better shape. I’m a big believer that things happen for a reason and that God was pushing me towards this. Several months later, I had an opportunity come up that is going to be physically demanding. I’ll have more on that next Friday, January 25.
I now have a treadmill and often run when it’s below freezing outside. I still don’t like it any better, but I do like making progress. I created a list of 19 things I want to do in 2019 and many of them are focused on fitness:
- Run 1,000 miles this year.
- As reference, I ran 571.1 in 2018.
- Run at least one mile every day.
- Do a cross-training workout at least 3 times a week.
- It wasn’t on my list, but I would also like to run a half-marathon if it can fit in my schedule.
Old GeoffreyShilling.com Content Moved
All the development-related content that was here has moved to OrangeRiverDev.com. Although the theme hasn’t been updated to reflect the name, it will be over the next few months. I love development and it will continue to be one of my big hobbies.
